Case study Secrid

Secrid is a young, creative and fast-growing company that designs, produces and sells a new generation of wallets in The Netherlands and worldwide. More than a hundred employees are working together to build new pocket-sized products and services. The company grew from an innovative start-up to a successful multinational in ten years. Secrid wallets are sold in more than 8,000 stores worldwide, with four new points of sale added daily.   
 
To keep its suppliers more involved in the production process, Secrid wanted a new portal to collaborate with these suppliers. Emixa created the application using the Mendix low-code platform. Emixa also provides integration between all systems via Boomi. The administrative processing of the entire production process is now automated with Boomi and Mendix.

Business Challenges

Secrid has experienced tremendous growth since its establishment. The number of employees at the company doubled in the past four years to more than a hundred. In ten years, Secrid grew from an innovative start-up to a globally renowned multimillion-dollar company. 
 
Due to the enormous growth and a relatively complex product, it became increasingly difficult to manage the production process properly. Secrid sells more than one and a half million wallets annually in six different models and hundreds of versions. Sales now take place in seventy countries.   
 
More than fifty suppliers are involved in the production of the wallets. Despite the complexity of this extensive production process, it was still based on Excel. This led to a lack of real-time insights into the production status, creating challenges in tracking the supply of leather for the wallets.
 
How many can they craft from a single piece of leather? And, which ones meet the high standard for sale? Secrid deals with different versions, and they only find out late in the process how much leather is available. This posed many challenges for planning, inventory management and financial insights. It also increases the risk of problems in inventory management because products are no longer available, potentially compromising the overall customer experience.

Keys to Success

To address these challenges, Emixa built the new supplier portal together with Secrid, based on Mendix. This portal is the platform that helps Secrid and its suppliers to collaborate better by bringing transparency to inventory, realisation, rejections and planning. Secrid does not have its own factory, which makes it difficult to oversee the production process. By connecting the fifty suppliers via the new supplier portal, a complete overview of production is created. The continuous sharing of insights, information, and knowledge forms a unified thread, creating a singular "chain of truth."
 
Together with UX studio All This, Emixa and Secrid designed and built the Supplier Portal with the Mendix low-code platform. Both developers and business professionals were involved in the process to ensure that the solution would meet the requirements. Because it must be easy for all users to use the solution, optimum user experience is paramount. Emixa therefore applied the mobile-first principle so that the use of the portal would be location-independent and very flexible.  
 
An important part of this project is the NetSuite integration. This SaaS ERP system has been fully integrated by Emixa with Boomi into all parts of the chain, such as the web shop, payment, production, warehousing and logistics. This platform now processes between three hundred thousand and four hundred thousand messages daily, so that all users have the right insights. Across the entire IT landscape, data is matched, cleaned up and enriched, increasing data quality. Only changes are synchronised if master data has changed substantively. In Secrid's case, this means a 95% reduction in integration traffic. 
 
By using the Boomi integration platform as a service (iPaaS), Secrid now uses Boomi to execute more than one hundred and fifty integration processes. These include the Shopify online e-commerce platform, a B2B e-commerce platform, Oracle database applications and customer support applications. Secrid can now automate processes end-to-end, including billing and customer relationship management. Boomi shortened Secrid's core business process lead time by almost 50 percent.

Results

With the supplier portal, Secrid has succeeded in getting its suppliers on the same page and has thus been able to improve and accelerate the production process. The project was carried out in close collaboration with Secrid's team. The UX specialists from All this and a Secrid developer worked with Emixa in one scrum team. Secrid responded well to the agile way of working in which business and IT collaborate intensively to arrive at a valuable solution more quickly. Thanks to the platform, order placement has been enormously accelerated. The throughput time of an order now takes 50 to 75% less time. 
 
During Emixa's Sprint 0, key things like data and integration architecture, customer journey, work inventory and project planning were properly addressed. Emixa did the actual realisation with the Stay Fit and Secure programme that tests the quality of the software and identifies risks and violations in accordance with ISO 25010 and Mendix best practices.
